Director of Liturgy and Music Summary statement of duties: The Director of Liturgy and Music is responsible for working with the PLD/Pastor in providing effective liturgical direction for the parish. General responsibilities include coordinating all aspects of liturgy and music for worship. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Liturgical & Pastoral Administration - Works under the supervision of the Pastoral Life Director/Pastor and in collaboration with other members of the pastoral staff to serve and advance the mission of St. Pius X Community
- Stands for and promotes liturgy and music as the essential elements of the parish mission
- Supervises and is responsible for all liturgical celebrations
- Prepares the liturgy and music budget in consultation with the PLD/Pastor
- Recruits, trains, schedules, and evaluates musicians and cantors to help facilitate the active participation of the congregation
- Hires and supervises additional musicians
- Develops and chairs regular meetings of the parish Liturgy Committee
- Works with the coordinators of lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and ushers in coordinating the training and scheduling of liturgical ministers
- Provides leadership in areas related to liturgical music, i.e., prepares worship aids for special liturgical celebrations, assures copyright permissions, selects and maintains musical instruments, manages care of all parish-owned musical instruments.
- Attends and participates in regularly scheduled and other staff meetings
- Is visibly present at parish events, keeping attuned to the faith and concerns of parishioners
Musical Performance & Implementation - Develops, implements and evaluates strategies for increasing parishioners’ participation in liturgies
- Selects and teaches music for the congregation
- Coordinates with other parish musicians and/or furnishes suitable music and musical leadership for all liturgies and other prayer and devotion services
- Builds repertoire and encourages the congregation to participate in singing during liturgies
- Works with other parish musicians to provide a broad repertoire of musical offerings for weekend liturgies to give each Mass a distinct, but excellent musical style
- Assures that all choirs are properly staffed and trained and that they rehearse regularly; develops musical talent pool
- When asked, provides appropriate consultation and music for weddings and funerals, with additional compensation
- Develops musical programs and performances geared toward attracting the local community
- Supervises, manages and performs at periodic concerts that provide an outreach to the local community
Educational Background & Continuing Education - Excellent keyboard and vocal skills and knowledge required; knowledge of Catholic liturgy and music
- Ability to work with volunteer and professional musicians and choristers to develop a broad range of musical offerings
- Maintains and develops his/her own musical skills and professional knowledge of liturgy and music
