All,
In
the bulletin this weekend was a letter from Archbishop O’Brien and a Q&A
section on the pending legislation to extend the statue of limitations on child
abuse cases. I can’t imagine the pain and suffering of those vicitimzed
by church employees and I continue to pray for them for their healing and
peace. Yet, this legislation opens the church up to untold financial
damage and ultimately the possible decrease or elimination of the good services
we provide. Please see this webiste and write to your legislator or to
all those on the committee requesting that they oppose HB 858. The
attached has a sample letter and the email addresses/phone numbers of the
judiciary committee. Thank you.

Legislation Threatens Parishes, Schools |
|
Legislation (HB 858)
recently introduced by Del. Eric Bromwell, D-8, would allow trial lawyers to
sue the Catholic Church, including its parishes and schools, for millions in
decades-old sexual abuse cases. After similar legislation passed in
California, 1000 lawsuits were filed leading to $1.8 billion in settlements
with approximately $720 million going to trial lawyers. Click
here to learn more about this legislation and why the Church is
opposed to it. |
